528. Paranormal Activity 4
Let's not beat around the bush - this is the most boring movie of all 528 this year so far.
Last year, despite huge reservations, I thought Paranormal Activity 3 was one of the creepiest movies of the year.
My reservations? Ah, yes. I am fed up to the back teeth of found footage films and Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 bored me rigid.
This one is by far the worst of the bunch and that is really saying something.
Yet, it won't stop directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost laughing all the way to the bank, will it?
Actually producer Oren Peli is the man who is really cashing in - he has been behind all four of the franchise.
It seems like that team has well and truly run out of ideas now though because for large parts of this movie the attempts to make the audience jump didn't come from paranormal activity at all.
Honestly, at one point fear is meant to be elicited from a cat leaping across a laptop during a skype session.
Skype plays a major part of this movie with 15-year-old Alex Newton (Kathryn Newton) relaying the creepy goings-on to her boyfriend Ben (Matt Shively).
I have to say the bit which made my skin crawl the most was when Shively (22 in real life) asked Newton (15 in real life) to flash at him over the computer. Thankfully, she declined.
The premise of the film is that Alex and her family's home becomes haunted after a little boy from across the road (Brady Allen) comes to stay.
This Damien-type character prompts Alex's adopted brother (Aiden Lovekamp) to transform from the lovable little soccer player to devil boy.
And, of course, every 'dramatic' detail is recorded on a host of recording devices which are spread around the house or carried at all times by its residents, despite them apparently being petrified out of their wits.
Of course, I was one of the few people above 20 years old in screen 3 at Nottingham Cineworld on Saturday evening. A few of the largely teenage audience yakked throughout or screamed at the slightest incident on the screen.
They need to watch a few more movies - because as soon as they start discriminating, the Paranormal Activity franchise, with its wooden acting and dull storylines will, thankfully, be over.
Laughs: none
Jumps: two minor ones
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 1/10
