521. Bhoot Returns 3D
There really isn't a dull moment when I watch films in Leicester.
This was my first trip there since the Piccadilly Cinema told me it would not play a movie for just one person.
I was pleased the Odeon did not have the same policy last night because it appeared I had screen 10 to myself for Ramgopal Varma's 3D horror.
Or so I thought...
Just as the picture was about about to begin two teenagers sat down...literally next to me.
They tried to engage me in a banal conversation but, after seeing I was not interested, moved two rows further back.
They then started talking louder and louder to the point of shouting ludicrously.
I remonstrated and they moved to the back of the auditorium but my breaking point finally came when, at a tense moment in the movie, one of them suddenly appeared at my side and tried to make me jump.
Jump I did - straight out of my seat and got them chucked out.
This again left me in the cinema on my own.
Now normally, this would have been perfect but Bhoot Returns is a very dark movie and uses very loud sound effects, so I must admit I was getting a bit spooked.
This is far from classic Bollywood. It is a low budget film which relies heavily on shocking by sound.
Thus, there is heavy use of stereo for effects like ticking of clocks and heavy footsteps. And I have to say this did leave me somewhat disconcerted.
Bhoot Returns is a simple story of a house which is occupied by a ghost.
A family move in and the only one who can see the spirit is a 6-year-old girl (Alayana Sharma).
She keeps referring to Shabbu but her family think she has created an imaginary friend and think nothing of it until things literally start to go bump in the night.
Let's be honest, the acting in Bhoot Returns is pedestrian at best. In fact, Sharma takes the only real plaudits for her genuinely creepy portrayal.
In addition, the 3D in Bhoot Returns is plain bizarre because in the foreground it is often out of focus.
But, despite the deserved criticisms it did make me jump and made me feel genuinely uneasy.
I suspect, however, that this was more to do with my surroundings and that blessed ticking clock than the movie.
Laughs: none
Jumps: three
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 4/10
